To help management personnel at all levels within the company enhance their skills and build high-performing teams, Zero One Business School invited Ms. Qin Qin (former Director of the Leadership Center at China Mobile Management Institute) to our company from August 21st to 23rd. She conducted a training course titled “Becoming a Manager Who Knows People and Assigns Tasks Wisely” at the International Conference Center on the 4th floor of Building 1 in Zero One Science and Technology Park. A total of 39 participants from various units under Zhengda Machinery & Electronics Co., Ltd. took part in the training.

This course uses the DISC assessment tool—widely adopted by Fortune 500 companies—and the situational leadership model as its core tools. It focuses on helping managers quickly master the art of understanding and effectively assigning tasks to the right people, thereby enhancing their leadership skills and motivating their subordinates to take initiative, enjoy their work, and perform with passion. The course is divided into three main sections: First, Understanding the Manager’s Role; Second, High-EQ Management Communication; and Third, Leading High-Performing Teams.
The first day’s session involved using DISC as a tool to assess oneself, followed by analysis and illustrative examples. We explored the differences in thinking and behavior among the four DISC personality types, as well as the distinctive characteristics they exhibit in terms of language patterns, body language, vocal tone, and facial expressions. After conducting the DISC assessment and analysis, we delved deeper into how to better interact with individuals belonging to each of these four types—whether as leaders or subordinates. In conclusion: No single individual is perfect, but it is entirely possible to build a perfectly coordinated team.

The next day’s session focused on how to assess employee status and analyze the four stages of employee maturity (D1–D4). Using vivid videos and practical examples, Teacher Qin helped everyone understand the two key metrics for assessing employee status—capability and willingness—and illustrated how these two factors determine the four stages of employee maturity (D1–D4) as well as the four corresponding management approaches (S1–S4). In conclusion, he highlighted three essential competencies that every outstanding manager must possess: 1. Diagnosis: Assessing subordinates’ individual characteristics and developmental stages; 2. Flexibility: Employing different management approaches with ease and adaptability; 3. Building partnerships: Achieving mutual understanding between leaders and subordinates regarding the most appropriate management approach to adopt.

On the final day of the course, in the morning session, Teacher Qin asked the participants to put into practice the theoretical knowledge they had learned over the previous two days. Using the film "Indiana Jones," they analyzed various scenes and characters, identifying each character's DISC type, determining the stage of maturity that each character had reached, and deciding which management approach—from S1 to S4—would be most appropriate for an effective manager to adopt in order to lead their team to success. In the afternoon, Teacher Qin explained why it’s crucial to motivate employees and how to integrate six major management motivation theories—XY Theory, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Two-Factor Theory, Reinforcement Theory, Expectancy Theory, and Equity Theory—to motivate employees at four different maturity levels (D1–D4) and subordinates belonging to the four different DISC types. Given the multitude of variables and environmental factors present in real-world situations, Teacher Qin also emphasized during the training that there is no single “best” management approach—rather, the optimal approach depends entirely on the specific context.
After three days of intensive learning, the concept of management has undergone a dramatic transformation in my mind. At its core, management is about managing relationships. Teacher Qin delivered an outstanding lecture, complemented by vivid case analyses that beautifully illustrated the interactive dynamics among people. It was also the first time in a long while that I truly experienced the feeling of putting down my phone and immersing myself fully in focused learning. In the end, our Youthful Energy team secured second place in the group competition with a score of 200 points; first place was claimed by Xiao Lin’s team, who edged out our team by just five points. The performances of the other two teams were equally impressive.

Jack Welch once said: “Knowing people and assigning them the right tasks is a mandatory lesson for every manager!” At its core, management is an interactive relationship among people. To become a manager who knows people well and assigns them appropriately, one needs not only strong leadership skills but also high emotional intelligence and effective communication abilities. Only by precisely applying the right management approaches can one lead a high-performing team.
This is the second in-house training session organized by Zero One Business School this year. Everyone was thoroughly engaged and eager for more, with many participants commenting that courses that are highly practical, feature simple and easy-to-learn tools, and can be readily applied in real-world settings should be organized more frequently. We also warmly invite our clients and companies within the park to actively participate. Serving society and striving for excellence—this is our mission, one we’ll never give up on.
